Art and Design

At Sunnyside Academy, our Art and Design curriculum inspires, challenges and equips pupils with the skills to create, experiment and express themselves visually. Aligned with the National Curriculum, it reflects our vision of developing confident, creative thinkers who engage thoughtfully with the world around them. We ensure all students, regardless of background, ability or personal circumstance can excel in the arts.

Art is central to a balanced education. Through it, pupils develop observation, imagination and communication skills beyond language. Our curriculum is flexible and differentiated, catering to diverse learning styles, ensuring every student develops technical proficiency and cultural literacy in art.

Our aims for all pupils:

  • Understand the formal elements of art (line, shape, colour, tone, texture, pattern and form) and how they communicate visually.
  • Develop skills in a range of media and techniques (drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage and digital art).
  • Study and evaluate artists from various times, cultures and backgrounds, understanding how art reflects and shapes history and identity.
  • Experiment creatively and reflect on their work, valuing both process and outcomes.
  • Build a visual vocabulary to discuss their own and others’ art.
  • Make connections between art and other subjects, enhancing personal development.

Curriculum Design Principles
Our curriculum is sequential, building knowledge and skills from EYFS to Year 6. Key concepts such as observation and composition are revisited to deepen understanding. We ensure inclusivity by offering differentiated support, particularly for SEND and EAL students.

We engage with local artists and diverse traditions, reflecting our community and fostering personal connections to art.

End Goal
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will have:

  • A strong understanding of artistic concepts and techniques.
  • Confidence to express personal ideas visually.
  • Cultural awareness to appreciate art in everyday life.
  • Critical, creative and independent thinking skills that support lifelong learning.

We are committed to an inclusive environment where all students can reach their full artistic potential.
