Computing

“Digital literacy is not just about using technology, it is about understanding it well enough to use it safely, responsibly and creatively.”
UNESCO

At Sunnyside, we believe computing is essential for preparing children to live, learn and thrive in a modern, digital world. Our computing curriculum is designed to give children the knowledge, skills and confidence to use technology safely, creatively and purposefully.

From the early years, children are introduced to technology in a hands-on and exploratory way. They experience a wide range of devices, helping them to understand how technology fits into everyday life. These early experiences build curiosity, confidence and strong foundations for future learning.

As children progress through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, the curriculum develops systematically across three key strands: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. Children learn how computers and programs work, how to create and present digital content and how to behave responsibly online.

Programming and computational thinking are taught in an engaging and progressive way, beginning with simple sequencing and instructions and developing into more complex coding, debugging and problem-solving tasks. Children use both visual and text-based programming to design games, animations, apps and digital solutions linked to real-world contexts.

Information Technology is embedded throughout the curriculum, giving pupils frequent opportunities to use technology creatively and purposefully. These experiences support communication skills, collaboration, creativity and pride in producing high-quality digital work.

Online safety and digital literacy are a priority across the whole school. Through regular, age-appropriate teaching and dedicated “My Online Life” units, children learn how to stay safe online, behave respectfully, protect their personal information and know where to go for help if something concerns them. These themes are revisited and built upon each year to reflect the changing digital world.

To ensure this teaching is effective and up to date, staff receive regular training in computing and online safety through our curriculum partners, Knowsley Education, including the latest national guidance and safeguarding expectations. This ensures children are taught consistently and safely and that adults are confident in supporting and responding to online safety concerns.

We also recognise the importance of working in partnership with parents and carers. The school produces monthly online safety and technology newsletters to keep families informed about emerging technologies, online trends and practical ways to support children in using the internet safely at home.

By the time children leave our school, we want them to be confident, capable and responsible digital citizens. They will understand how digital systems work, be able to create and evaluate digital content and make informed, safe choices online. Our computing curriculum equips children not just for the next stage of education, but for life in an increasingly digital world.
