Geography

“Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?” – Michael Palin

At Sunnyside Academy, we want our children to be curious about the world around them and excited to learn more about it. Through our Geography curriculum, we help children explore different places, people and environments, both locally and across the globe. Geography encourages children to ask questions, investigate and develop a deeper understanding of how our world works – from natural features like rivers and mountains to how people live, work and interact with their environment. We aim to inspire a lifelong fascination with the world and help our pupils see their place within it.

Our Geography curriculum is designed carefully to support our children in their learning:

Knowing Our Place – Learn more about their local area and understand how it fits into the wider world.

Investigating the World – Explore and investigate places using maps, photographs, digital tools and other sources of information.

Asking Questions & Thinking Critically – Ask thoughtful questions, carry out research and use evidence to form their own opinions.

Building Vocabulary – Develop their geographical vocabulary and apply it in meaningful, real-life contexts.

Caring for Our Planet – Develop an awareness of sustainability and begin to understand what it means to be a responsible global citizen.

Shaping the future – Build the skills and curiosity for careers beyond school, resulting in growing into thoughtful, confident and responsible global citizens.

Through fun, engaging lessons and exciting topics, we aim to spark children’s curiosity about the world around them. Our Geography curriculum helps them understand their place in the world, explore different places and people and make sense of how the Earth works. We want children to build knowledge step by step so they can know more, remember more and understand more as they grow.
